This chemical drawing program is the ‘front end’ used forrunning molecular calculations with ACD Labs’ commercial modelingsoftware.Now in its 12 thversion, it conta ins most (but not all) of the features of commercial drawingpackages like ChemDraw, including “tools for 2D structure cleaning, 3Doptimization and viewing, InChiI generation andconversion, drawing of polymers, organometallics, Markush structures, and IUPACsystematic naming capability for molecules with fewer than 50 atoms and 3rings” (allowing ACD Labs to blow their own horn a little).A 2009 review concludes that ChemSketch andChemDraw are the top two drawing programs available (and only ChemSketch is free to students). Later on, more developers came to aid for development and code maintenance. Its originally written by Thomas Volk from Germany. Chemtool is a lightweight application for drawing chemical structures like organic molecules.
